Burns in New Delhi to push for Pakistan-India dialogue: US

Wednesday, June 10, 2009
WASHINGTON: As a senior US diplomat headed to New Delhi, the Obama administration Tuesday fully favored resumption of Pakistan-India dialogue for improvement in their bilateral relations and establishment of peace in the region.

Clearly, we would support more dialogue between India and Pakistan. We would support more dialogue between the two countries. I am sure that Undersecretary Burns will talk about this issue among the many issues he has on his agenda,” spokesman Ian Kelly said at the daily briefing.

He was asked whether Washington was pushing for resumption of dialogue between the two South Asian nuclear powers that saw their relations strained over Mumbai bombing in November last year.

Kelly spoke on the eve of US Undersecretary of State William Burns talks with Indian leaders in New Delhi.

Burns, accompanied by new US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Robert Blake, who also served as a senior diplomat in New Delhi. Blake will travel to Nepal after visiting the Indian capital.

Islamabad has been urging India to return to the negotiating table for composite dialogue that had reduced tension between the two countries in the last few years.

The composite dialogue is aimed at resolution of outstanding disputes between the two countries including the key Kashmir question.
