LIMA: Nine Peruvian police officers and an undetermined number of civilians have been killed in clashes in the Amazon, a local mayor said on Friday. "Up to now we have registered nine police officers killed and an unofficial number of indigenous people," Luis Nenez Teran, the mayor of Bagua, said. The clashes came after police tried to retake a road occupied by indigenous Amazonians ten days ago. The road is around 1,000 kilometers north of Lima, near the town of Bagua, which has been the site of various disturbances as indigenous groups protest against government legislation.Since April, the tribes have been angrily demonstrated against the government for moves they say impinge on Amazon land, oil and mineral rights.
