Pakistan defeat Egypt 3-0 in hockey Jr WC

Tuesday, June 9, 2009
JOHOR‑BAHRU: Haseem Khan and Kashif Ali again spearheaded Pakistan to a 3‑0 victory over Egypt in their second match of the 9th men’s Junior World Cup Hockey Tournament on Monday.

Sprightly forward Abdul Haseem Khan clinched two field goals while leftback Kashif Ali converted a penalty corner as Pakistan found their true rhythm in the second session of play after a barren first half.

It was Pakistan’s second consecutive victory in the tournament after their 7‑2 drubbing of Russia on the opening day Sunday—the two wins getting the greenshirts six points thus far.

Haseem, nephew of yesteryears’ star Hanif Khan, has accumulated five goals in the tournament with Kashif taking his tally to four goals as the pair had hammered three and two goals respectively against the Russians.

Pakistan, their only triumph being the 1979 inaugural edition, now play the reigning champions Argentina on Thursday and Belgium the very next day to complete their Pool A matches in the 20‑team preliminary round.

They will play all their three second round matches in nearby Singapore, the co‑hosts of the tournament, depending on their qualification.

The 20 teams have been divided into four pools of five teams each with two in each Pool to make further progress.

Earlier, in pool C Spain beat USA 9‑0. In pool D Netherlands defeated Poland 7‑2 and in pool B Australia thumped Chile 4‑0.

Germany have won the tournament a record four times in row (1982, 1984, 1989, 1993) while other titles winners have been Pakistan (1979), Australia (1997), India (2001) and reigning champions Argentina (2005).

Pakistan are now on the top in pool A with six points. They play Argentina on June 11 at 5.30 pm (PST).
